FAQ: List

What happens during the assessment process?

Caroline will meet with you to discuss what has been going on for your child. Then discussion on the reasons for referral and the play therapy process is explained. The child’s history, development, what has been happening in their lives will be explored and how this has affected them emotionally and behaviourally. The initial meeting also allows parents/carers to become familiar with the play therapist and the play therapy space.
If your child attends for Play Therapy, Caroline will see them on their own at weekly scheduled times for 50min sessions. A review session with parents/carers will be scheduled every 6-8 weeks. Joint sessions for you and your child may be possible if needed, engaging you both in playful and nurturing activities. With training in Integrated Attachment Family Therapy which uses principles from two attachment-based modalities – Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy and Theraplay – Caroline teaches how to enhance regulation, connection, and joy between parents/carers and children and guides parents/carers to do reparative work around family trauma.

What happens during a Play Therapy session?

Sessions are scheduled once a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. Caroline uses an integrative, holistic and Child-centered approach, which means during the session a child has the freedom to express whatever it is that she/he/they wishes to express through whatever medium they choose. During this process, children are not directed but are encouraged to engage in their own process at their own pace. This establishment of permissiveness maintains a deep respect for the child’s ability to problem-solve and make his/her/their own choices. Caroline uses a range of directive and non-directive techniques to support the child.
